What is Lip Neutralization
Lip neutralization is a specialized permanent makeup treatment designed to correct uneven or discolored lips by neutralizing unwanted pigmentation. Whether your lips have dark, cool, or ashy tones, this technique restores a softer, more natural hue for a balanced, refreshed appearance.
Each treatment begins with a detailed consultation to assess your natural lip tone and desired results. Our expert artists use a digital machine with fine needles to gently deposit pigment, evening out discoloration while subtly enhancing the shape of the lips.
Depending on the level of pigmentation, multiple sessions may be required, typically spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. The result is a smooth, even-toned pout with a natural-looking tint that heals beautifully. Lip neutralization is ideal for clients with hyperpigmented lips or anyone looking to achieve a more even, refined lip tone.

What to Expect
This specialized treatment gently neutralizes dark, melanin-rich lips to create a softer, warmer tone with natural-looking results. By correcting deep or uneven pigmentation, we bring out a more balanced and vibrant lip color. It’s ideal for anyone with naturally dark lips or hyperpigmentation who wants an even, enhanced appearance.
Each session begins with a detailed consultation to evaluate your natural lip tone and undertones. Because every client is unique, we custom-blend pigments using advanced color theory to neutralize darkness before layering the perfect shade. Most clients need a few sessions to gradually build and refine the color for a smooth, even finish that looks completely natural.
If you’re interested in lip neutralization, we recommend sending clear photos of your lips or booking a consultation so we can determine if this treatment is right for you.
FAQs
Do I need a consultation?
A consultation is required for lip neutralization, as not all clients are suitable candidates. You’re welcome to email photos to contact@dermaluxespa.com, allowing us to assess your lips and create a personalized plan tailored to your goals.
What should I prepare before my appointment?
Preparing properly helps ensure the best results and a smooth healing process:
No recent fillers: Avoid lip injections or fillers for at least 6 weeks prior to your appointment.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your visit.
Color reference: Bring your favorite lipstick or lip liner to help us match your desired shade.
Cold sore prevention: If you’re prone to cold sores or fever blisters, you’ll need an antiviral prescription from your doctor. Start taking it 2 days before your appointment and bring proof of prescription. This is required—no exceptions.
Moisturize: Make sure your lips are soft and hydrated. If they are cracked, peeling, or excessively dry, please contact us to reschedule.
What is the aftercare?
Expect minor swelling, tenderness, and scabbing for a few days. The color will appear darker at first and gradually lighten as your lips heal. Follow all aftercare instructions carefully for best results.
During the first 10 days of healing after getting permanent makeup, it’s important to avoid the following:
- Touching the Area: Avoid touching the treated area with your hands to prevent infection.
- Picking or Scratching: Do not pick, scratch, or rub the scabs or flakes to avoid pigment loss and scarring.
- Water Exposure: Keep the area dry; avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas, and long showers.
- Sweating: Minimize activities that cause heavy sweating, such as intense workouts, as sweat can interfere with healing.
- Makeup: Avoid applying makeup on or near the treated area to prevent contamination and irritation.
- Skincare Products: Refrain from using creams, lotions, exfoliants, or other skincare products on the treated area unless recommended by your artist.
- Sun Exposure: Protect the area from direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds, as UV rays can cause fading and irritation.
- Sleeping on the Face: Try not to sleep on your face to prevent rubbing and pressure on the treated area.
- Alcohol and Caffeine: Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption, as they can thin the blood and delay the healing process.
- Facial Treatments: Avoid facials, chemical peels, laser treatments, and other cosmetic procedures that could affect the treated area.
How long does the procedure take?
The duration varies depending on the area being treated and the complexity of the design. Typically, a session can last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.
How long do the results last?
Lip neutralization results are designed to enhance your natural lip color and create a more even tone. While not permanent, the effects of this specialized treatment can last for a significant period, typically one to two years, though individual experiences may vary. Several factors can influence the longevity of your results, including lifestyle choices like sun exposure and smoking, as well as individual skin type and how diligently you follow aftercare instructions. Your artist will assess your individual needs and advise on the ideal timing for these maintenance sessions.
Will I need a touch-up?
Yes, it may take several sessions to even out the tone, especially for clients with darker lips. The process is gradual, and depending on the intensity of the pigmentation, multiple treatments spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart may be needed to achieve the desired result. Each session helps to further neutralize the dark tones, gradually revealing a more balanced and natural lip color.
Is lip neutralization right for me?
Lip Neutralization may not be suitable for individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, have certain skin conditions, active cold sores, or are currently taking blood thinners or acne medications. A consultation is recommended to determine your eligibility.
Important considerations:
- Active Herpes Simplex Virus (Cold Sores): Increases the risk of an outbreak and may affect healing.
- Recent Lip Fillers: A minimum of six weeks is required after lip injections before treatment.
- Chronic Dry or Chapped Lips: Can affect pigment retention and lead to uneven results, increased irritation, and prolonged healing.
