What Is Permanent Eyeliner
Permanent eyeliner, also known as lash enhancement tattoo, is a form of permanent makeup that defines and enhances the eyes by implanting pigment along the lash line. At Dermaluxe Spa in Houston, our skilled artists use a digital device with ultra-fine needles to create precise, smooth lines that complement your natural eye shape.
For a soft, natural look, lash enhancement subtly darkens the lash line to make lashes appear fuller without visible makeup. For a bolder style, we offer thicker eyeliner on the upper and lower lids for a more defined and dramatic finish.
Both options are smudge-proof, waterproof, and long-lasting, perfect for anyone who wants to save time on daily makeup or maintain a polished look through workouts, busy days, and Houston’s humidity.
Is this Right For You?
01 Soft, Defined Eyes
You want to enhance your eyes with subtle definition that adds depth and shape without the look of harsh or heavy eyeliner.
02 Smudge-Proof
Permanent eyeliner gives you long-lasting definition that won’t smudge, fade, or require daily application.
03 Starting Fresh
If you’ve had previous permanent makeup, a consultation may be required before moving forward.
What to Expect
Your permanent eyeliner appointment begins with a detailed consultation to choose the ideal style, thickness, and color that complements your eyes and skin tone. Once the design is mapped, a topical numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable throughout the process.
Using a digital tattoo machine with ultra-fine needles, your artist carefully implants pigment along the lash line (and, if desired, creates a thicker eyeliner on the upper or lower lids). Most clients describe the sensation as a light vibration or tickling near the lashes rather than pain.
The procedure typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the style and coverage. When finished, your eyes will appear beautifully defined with clean, smudge-proof lines that enhance your natural features.

Is this treatment painful?
Most clients describe the sensation as mild to moderate discomfort. A topical numbing cream is applied before and during the procedure to keep you comfortable.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
- No lash extensions or strips at least one week before appointment
- No lash serums for 1 month
- Do not wear your contact lenses (clean contacts can be worn 72 hours after the procedure)
- Bring eye glasses with you if you wear contacts.
- Consider asking your primary health care physician for a Valium, if you think there will be a lot of nervousness or eye twitching during the procedure.
- Purchase new mascara to use after your eyeliner procedure to avoid any infections.
- Lubricating eye drops (If dry eye occurs use for 3 days after procedure, if necessary)
- To reduce swelling a frozen bag of peas can be used
What is the healing process like?
Initial healing usually takes about 5 to 7 days. You may experience slight swelling, redness, or tightness around the eye area. The pigment will appear darker at first and then gradually soften as it heals.
During the first 10 days of healing after getting permanent makeup, it’s important to avoid the following:
- Touching the Area: Avoid touching the treated area with your hands to prevent infection.
- Picking or Scratching: Do not pick, scratch, or rub the scabs or flakes to avoid pigment loss and scarring.
- Water Exposure: Keep the area dry; avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas, and long showers.
- Sweating: Minimize activities that cause heavy sweating, such as intense workouts, as sweat can interfere with healing.
- Makeup: Avoid applying makeup on or near the treated area to prevent contamination and irritation.
- Skincare Products: Refrain from using creams, lotions, exfoliants, or other skincare products on the treated area unless recommended by your artist.
- Sun Exposure: Protect the area from direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds, as UV rays can cause fading and irritation.
- Sleeping on the Face: Try not to sleep on your face to prevent rubbing and pressure on the treated area.
- Alcohol and Caffeine: Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption, as they can thin the blood and delay the healing process.
- Facial Treatments: Avoid facials, chemical peels, laser treatments, and other cosmetic procedures that could affect the treated area.
How long does the procedure take?
The appointment typically takes around 1 to 2 hours. This includes numbing, consultation, pigment selection, and the tattooing process itself.
How long does permanent eyeliner last?
Are touch-ups necessary?
Yes, touch-ups are often necessary for permanent eyeliner. The initial application may not achieve the desired color intensity, so a touch-up helps fine-tune the pigment. Some areas may fade more quickly than others, and a touch-up ensures even color distribution. Adjustments may also be needed to perfect the shape and symmetry. Additionally, touch-ups help maintain the appearance over time, as all permanent makeup gradually fades.
Is permanent eyeliner right for me?
Permanent Eyeliner is not suitable for everyone. Please let us know before your appointment if any of the following apply to you:
Pregnancy or Breastfeeding: Due to hormonal changes and increased sensitivity, we do not perform lash enhancement during pregnancy or while nursing.
Active Eye Infections: Conditions such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), styes, or other infections must be fully healed before treatment.
Eyelid Disorders: Chronic conditions like blepharitis may interfere with healing and increase the risk of irritation.
Recent Eye Surgery: Clients recovering from LASIK, cataract surgery, or other eye procedures should be fully healed and cleared by their physician.
Glaucoma: Elevated intraocular pressure may pose risks during cosmetic tattooing near the eye.
Severe Dry Eye Syndrome: Chronic dryness or irritation may be worsened by the procedure and affect healing.
